Our Porters (The dream Team)
Baraka Trails porters play a crucial role in ensuring the success and safety of expeditions. Their duties include:
- Carrying Equipment and Supplies: Porters transport the majority of the gear needed for the climb, including tents, cooking equipment, food, and climbers’ personal items. This allows climbers to focus on the ascent without the burden of heavy loads.
- Setting Up Camp: Upon arrival at each campsite, porters set up tents and other necessary camp infrastructure. They also pack up camp in the morning before heading to the next site.
- Assisting with Meals: Porters often assist the cook by carrying food supplies and helping with meal preparation and cleanup. This ensures climbers have nutritious meals throughout the trek.
- Fetching Water: Porters collect water from nearby streams or other sources and ensure it is treated and safe for drinking and cooking.
- Maintaining Hygiene: They help maintain the cleanliness of the campsites, which includes proper waste disposal and ensuring that the area is left in good condition.
- Providing Support to Climbers: Porters often help climbers with various tasks, such as adjusting backpacks, lending a hand on difficult sections of the trail, and offering encouragement and support.
- Monitoring Health and Safety: Experienced porters are trained to recognize symptoms of altitude sickness and other health issues. They can provide basic first aid and alert guides if a climber needs more advanced medical attention.
The dedication and hard work of Baraka Trails porters are essential to the smooth of our operations and success of each climb, making them indispensable members of the Baraka Trails trekking team.
Tanzania Porters Association (TPA)
Baraka Trails is deeply committed to the ethical treatment and well-being of our porters. In alignment with the Tanzania Porters Association (TPA) and Kilimanjaro Guides Association (KGA) guidelines, we have implemented several key practices to ensure the best working conditions for our team:
- Adherence to TPA Guidelines: The Tanzania Porters Association was founded to improve working conditions for porters on Mount Kilimanjaro. The TPA sets ground rules covering minimum wage, maximum carrying capacity, and the recommended number of porters per trip and per guest. We strictly follow these guidelines to ensure fair treatment.
- Proper Staffing: We staff each trip with an adequate number of porters, typically three or four per hiker, to prevent overloading. This ensures that no porter is burdened with excessive weight, promoting their health and safety.
- Provision of Necessities: We ensure that our porters have proper food, comfortable sleeping conditions, and adequate trekking gear. This includes nutritious meals, quality tents, sleeping bags, and appropriate clothing and equipment for the trek.
- Health and Safety Checks: Daily health checks are conducted for all our workers during the trek, similar to those we perform for our clients. This allows us to monitor their well-being and address any health concerns promptly.
- Adequate Rest and Downtime: We are committed to ensuring that each team member gets sufficient rest and downtime throughout the trek. This helps maintain their physical and mental well-being, contributing to the overall success of the expedition.
- Evacuation Protocol: In the event of illness or injury, we use the same evacuation protocol for our porters as we do for our clients. This ensures that any team member in need of medical attention receives prompt and proper care.
By placing an emphasis on ethical porter treatment, Baraka Trails ensures that our porters are well-cared for, creating a positive and supportive environment that benefits both our team and our clients.
