Zanzibar (The Spice Island)
Zanzibar is the ultimate Indian Ocean experience, with its fascinating history, incredible nature, enchanting sunset and magnificent beaches, altogether embraced by the scent of exotic spices. If you are looking for a peaceful yet active escape, Zanzibar is the perfect place to give rein to your holiday wanderlust.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, Tanzania. Transfer to your arranged accommodation. If time permits, explore the city of Arusha and visit local markets or cultural
sites.
A one day hike inside of Kilimanjaro National Park allows you to experience the thrill of climbing Africa’s highest mountain while you avoid the summit and extreme altitudes. We offer low to medium or high fitness options via the Marangu (Rain forest), Shira (Shira Plateau) or Machame (Rain forest) trails with an expert Mountain guide. Only one or two days on the mountain will be enough to give you a full picture of what it takes to be part of a Kilimanjaro trekking expedition.
This climb is perfect if you travel with children who are not ready for the full hike yet, or if your holiday is too short but you still want to enjoy the trip.
On these hikes you will reach the lower camps of Kilimanjaro, delve into pristine tropical wilderness and see breathtaking landscapes around. The trail taken by first Kilimanjaro explorers, Marangu is home to black-and-white colobuses living in the branches of tropical trees growing along the trail. A one-day Kilimanjaro trip leads you up to Mandara Hut and back to the entry gate. A two-day option is a more immersive trip with an overnight stay at Mandara Hut, followed by a hike towards Horombo Hut Camp or Maundi Crater. Overall, it is a short, yet fascinating adventure where wildlife and local culture blend.

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the fascinating wildlife arena of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is over 260km2 (100 miles2) and was formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2 – 3 million years ago. It is now the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world and often referred to as “Africa’s Eden”. Home to more than 25,000 large mammals, it is not unusual to see all of the ‘Big Five’ (buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion and leopard) in a single day. Driving through the Ngorongoro Highlands, you will arrive at the crater rim and then descend down 610m (2000 feet) onto its floor to start your safari extravaganza. Our game drive will take us to Serengeti National Park for our night over.
Serengeti National Park is one of world’s greatest game parks. Meaning “endless plains” in the Maasai language, it is Tanzania’s oldest game reserve and is world-famous for the role it plays in the annual Great Migration, when an estimated two million herbivores – mostly wildebeest and zebra – migrate from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Reserve. As well as the
vast migratory herds, the Serengeti has incredible concentrations of predators – huge lion prides, great leopard sightings and high numbers of cheetahs.
After breakfast, you will return to the nearest airstrip for your scheduled short-haul flight to Zanzibar. After landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, you will be transferred by road straight to the superb Lodge on the north-eastern coast. Settle into your spacious suite, set in a beautiful garden with sensational views of the powdery white-sand beach and clear aquamarine waters from your private veranda. The comfortable hammock and couch are sure to be your ideal companions for the next few days.
After all the Serengeti action, you might want to do nothing except soak up the sun beside the pool or in your hammock with a refreshing cocktail from the lodge’s bar. Pamper yourself with wonderful, de-stressing massages and spa treatments.
If you are feeling active, set out on diving and snorkelling excursions to discover the Mnemba Atoll – a renowned reef and fascinating underwater world. Or simply hop onto one of the lodge’s complimentary kayaks and explore the surrounding turquoise waters. Day trips can also be arranged to explore the historical cobbled streets of Stone Town, the island capital’s old quarter, buzzing with colourful markets and local flavours.
Feast on fresh seafood combined with local produce in Matemwe’s cosy lounge area or around the pool. Lunch is usually a buffet-style blend of African and European dishes, and dinner features various fish, meat and vegetarian options. Marvel at the gorgeous sunset every night with a delicious drink in hand.
